Can you install light fittings I've bought myself?
Usually, yes — as long as they're approved for sale in Australia and rated for where they're going. Bathrooms and outdoor areas need fittings with a suitable IP rating.
Is it worth swapping old downlights for LEDs?
Usually. LED downlights use a fraction of the power of old halogens and run far cooler, so it's one of the simplest upgrades in a lighting refurb.
